Bio of Kamal El Bissati, Ph.D.

Biography:

Dr. Kamal El Bissati received his PhD from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie and Ecole Normale Superieure, Ulm, Paris. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Connecticut Medical School from 2003-2008. His pioneering work has led to develop live attenuated strains for malaria vaccination. He expends his scientific career at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York where he was appointed as Instructor in the Department of Pathology. He is currently a faculty member at the department of Surgery and member of the Global Health Committee at the University of Chicago Medical Center. His major research interests aim to decipher novel ways that new medicines and vaccine to prevent or treat Toxoplasmic eye diseases.  Dr. El Bissati received numerous awards including NIH and prestigious foundations awards. He holds 4 US patents in the area of malaria and toxoplasmosis.

Kamal El Bissati is advocate to help research and researchers from Morocco. Many graduates students and postdoc spent summer training periods in his laboratory. Dr. El Bissatii was Biomatec-US General Secretary and VP from 2009-2011 and 2011-2013 respectively. Under his leadership, he organized last two Biomatec-US’ workshops in hepatitis C in Oujda, Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca and Rabat. His project to create the first North Africa Consortium to treat toxoplamosis was recently approved by the Ministry of Moroccan Resident Abroad (MRE) and the Souissi Medical School in Rabat.
